Louise Avant, Minister of Music and Worship
Louise Kemp Avant grew up in Austin, receiving early musical training from Mildred and Bob Downer, former Ministers of Music, in the graded choir program here at First Baptist Church of Austin. Louise received a Bachelor of Music Education ('80) and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting ('90) from the University of Texas at Austin. Having served as organist and choir director in Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian churches, Louise has brought a fresh and eclectic musical style to First Austin. Louise joined the full-time ministerial staff in May, 1995. She assists in planning worship, personally directs several of the choirs, and is privileged to oversee an amazingly talented and skilled group of volunteer directors. Her husband, Bob, directs the Sanctuary Handbells and sings in the Sanctuary Choir. Their children, Elizabeth and Scott, are both professional musicians. Elizabeth and husband, Colin Gilligan, are involved in the music, communication and discipleship ministries of First Austin. To augment Louise's musical training, she has also attended classes in Bible and worship at Perkins and Southwestern Seminaries and continues to attend workshops on the latest music and worship trends. Louise sings with the Conspirare Symphonic Chorus and accompanies voice students at Austin Community College. She is an avid gardener, pianist and vocalist.
